This holiday weekend, one lucky local lady is celebrating her fifth year of smiling and nodding while her boyfriend tells yet another story about his party days back in college.

“Ah, I remember the first time I acted like I was impressed with his story about drunk dialing his friend’s hot mom during spring break his sophomore year like it was yesterday,” said Alyssa Henderson, 36. “It’s not the story that’s important. It’s more about making him feel heard, validated and sharpening fake laughing skills not even Meryl Streep can hold a candle to.”

Her boyfriend, 34-year-old Nate Fischer, agrees.

“I love that even when she’s had a rough day, I can make her laugh by telling her about that time my buddy Shane puked up a fifth of Fireball in the dumpster behind the Denny’s down on 4th,” Fischer said. “That story never gets old – it’s soo epic. All her friends have heard the story by now too, but I keep retelling it mostly for her because I know it’s her favorite.”

Henderson prides herself on being a good listener, which she says is the foundation of any long-term relationship.

“Honestly, it’s better than him asking me anything about my past. I just don’t think our relationship is ready for the story about how I blew my chemistry prof’s nipples off in the basement of the science building,” she said. “A little mystery helps keep the spark alive.”
