After waiting patiently for defunct Seattle superhero Phoenix Jones to resurface and help handle high-crime areas like Magnolia, Mayor Jenny Durkan has officially turned off the Phoenix Jones signal.

Despite her reluctance to make it official, the mayor was finally convinced by key staffers that Phoenix Jones had unplugged from the super-hero life for good. The Mayor officially flipped the switch off at 9:45 p.m.

“While we still welcome any future crime-fighting efforts by Mr. Jones, budget constraints just don’t allow us to keep the signal on 24/7 anymore,” said Durkan.

In its heyday, the signal was shone into Seattle’s gray skies to summon Jones for fights against homelessness, gentrification and City Councilmember Mike O’Brien.

“I just hope wherever he is, he knows the city of Seattle needs him more than ever,” Durkan said.  “Phoenix Jones was the only crime-fighter alive who could control the May Day crowd.”
