Anxiously glancing over its shoulder as it trotted past the Green Lake Boathouse, a Seattle-area resident coyote expressed hope it could reach its daily step goal before someone called animal control officers.

“The whole den is doing a 30-day wellness challenge and it’s pretty competitive,” explained the briskly moving Canis latrans, who refused to give a name. “I’m just trying to get around the lake before more cyclists get out here or an anxious jogger calls Wildlife Services to shoot me with a tranquilizer.”

The scruffy animal then mad-dogged a glare at a passing Golden Doodle.

“This area’s crawling with them too, but no one’s shooting them with tranquilizer guns,” the undomesticated animal said with a grumble. “And there’s definitely some rollerbladers shouting ‘On your right!’ who could use a tranquilizer. Why me and not them?”

Before loping away the animal asked, “Hey, am I supposed to go clockwise or counterclockwise? I can never figure that out.”
