Planning to enjoy a scenic kayak down the atmospheric river this weekend? Make sure you heed our five top safety tips before heading out to row row row your boat gently down the tropical jet stream:
- Be alert. While there are no rocks in an atmospheric river, 737 MAX door plugs, loose bolts and skydiving Alaska Airlines customers are flying everywhere.
- Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) that includes an entire parachute.
- Attach a whistle to your PFD. One blast is for attention; three blasts is “help.” No one will hear you, but hey, whistles are fun, right?
- Before leaving, arrange to have a friend pick you up downstream in northern Canada.
- Always keep your oar ready to knock away the ice axes of tired mountaineers on nearby peaks trying to find an easy way to ditch their climb.
Have fun out there, be safe, but most of all, never forget: selfie at the most dangerous point of the journey or it didn’t happen!
