Tonight—in an unexpectedly sentimental final gesture of Pac-12 Conference solidarity and nod to their historic rival, Washington State—the University of Washington voluntarily “Coug’d it” at their College Football Playoff National Championship game against the University of Michigan.
“You might have thought at the beginning of today that UW was ready to really stick it in Wazzu’s face that this year they’re not only ditching the Pac-12 Conference for the Big Ten and the days of Apple Cup games with real stakes involved with a completely undefeated record, but they’re also going to become the National Champions,” said UW Football Coach Kalen DeBoer. “But, no – we don’t play like that. We don’t go out like that. We’re classier than that. This Coug’s for you, Cougs.”
DeBoer went on to say that tonight’s completely deliberate heartbreaking loss to the Wolverines was also about solidarity with all of Washington state’s sports teams.
“I mean, at the end of the day, what’s more important: Being National Champions or a genuine Seattle sports team that knows how to end the year in such an agonizing way you almost immediately forget all the more joyous victories it took to get you there in the first place?” DeBoer said. “It’s been rough lately for the Mariners, Seahawks, and the Kraken, so we just didn’t want anyone to feel rudely left behind.”
At press time, UW fans were following suit with their own touching last move of conference unity by spending the rest of the night binging cans of Cougar Gold.
