In a stirring moment of brave devotion and vulnerability, today former Seattle franchise quarterback Russell Wilson attempted to reconnect with Pete Carroll outside the Seahawks coach’s Hunts Point home by raising up a boombox blasting The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony.”
“He’s probably tossing and turning in bed right now, stressed thinking about the upcoming wild-card playoff game against the Niners this weekend, and wishing he could be with me,” said Wilson, cranking up the volume another notch to make sure Carroll would notice. “I just want him to know he always can be with me when he’s ready—I’m right here, because the Broncos didn’t make it to the playoffs and Denver isn’t quite working out the way I thought it would. Go Hawks!”
Asked if he was flattered by Wilson’s gesture, Carroll seemed bewildered.
“Who? Oh, yeah him—did he not get the memo that we’re still in the playoffs?” Carroll said as he deplaned with Geno Smith and the rest of the Seahawks in SFO this afternoon. “Bless his heart. Hope he finds something better to do with all this extra free time he has on hand after the Broncos finished last in their AFC West division this season.”
By sheer coincidence, today 49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan’s home was also reportedly being serenaded by a boombox Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance held overhead as it played Simple Minds’ “Don’t You Forget About Me.”
