Move aside, Lizzo: Bumbershoot ticket-holders brokenhearted to hear of the Billboard chart queen’s canceled concert tonight quickly had their spirits lifted today when Dave Matthews and Macklemore announced they would be kicking off the festival instead with their new crossover album ‘Crash Into My Thrift Shop.’
A short video snippet of the album’s soulful title track released today immediately went viral as memories of Lizzo’s catchy hits “Juice,” “Truth Hurts” and “Good As Hell” quickly bit the dust.
“You’ve got your popped tags, your $20 in your pocket, tied to me tight tie me again,” Matthews mumble-sang while gazing deeply into Seattle native son Macklemore’s eyes.
“I’m huntin’, huntin’, lookin’ for candy to my soul — cashhh, crash into my … thrift shop, baby,” Macklemore croons back to Matthews. “And I come up to you to hike up that kilt up a little more, show some hairy leg to me. Boys’ dream!”
Although Tom Filbert, 43, of Phinney Ridge, was looking forward to Lizzo’s “Tempo,” he says tonight’s updated lineup is more than a boy’s dream.
“As a lifelong Seattle resident, you get to see Dave Matthews how often? Like every other month in the PCC cereal aisle?” said Filbert. “And, Macklemore, he only comes around maybe once a year now to apologize for his latest ill-fated attempt at altruism. So both of them coming together tonight to entertain us with a whole new album is pretty special.”
Bumbershoot spokesman Sean Tipps said festival organizers are not only overjoyed the Seattle musicians came to the weekend’s rescue, but that they’ve produced work that has every indication of turning into a pop-culture classic.
“I’m just going to say what we’re all thinking about this next-level collaboration,” Tipps said. “David Bowie and Freddie Mercury — may they rest in peace — ain’t got anything on this.”
