A packed Climate Pledge Arena went wild Wednesday night when new PWHL team the Seattle Torrent won their first game and a whole error-ridden speck on the front of the Seattle Times Sports Page.
“It was so exciting! They were trailing the whole game and then in the last minute and a half got two goals in 22 seconds to win it all against the New York Sirens,” said Torrent fan Lisa Kietzer. “And then what an honor it was for The Seattle Times to only cover 50% of its sports page front with an okay photo of a high school boys basketball game instead of 90% so there was still a speck left in the bottom corner to incorrectly attribute the Torrent’s win to the Sirens!”
Seattle Times Sports Editor Paul Barrett said he was glad to remember something other than men’s sports exists.
“While it was a huge sacrifice to forfeit any space on our page for anything but teenage boys playing basketball to athletes on a professional team making history, we were glad to do it,” said Barrett. “We look forward to covering the Starbucks Sirens exactly two more times for the rest of the year.”
Asked if the Seattle Times might also increase visibility of other professional women’s sports like the Seattle Majestics women’s tackle football team, Barrett said no because they already graciously did that in 2018 and aren’t due to again until 2028.
