During the lowest tide of the year today, Alki beachgoers in were treated to the rare discovery of a studio apartment renting for under $800 in Seattle.
“I thought it was just a myth that studio apartments in any part of Seattle were ever cheaper than $1,800 a month,” said tidepooler Lisa Barnes. “I’m looking around and I don’t even see a crazy neighbor or rental application tied to that RealPage.com company that uses AI to price-fix and jack up rents across an entire metro area. It says pets are welcome too, so it looks like they wouldn’t charge extra if after it goes underwater in an hour I find and adopt a pet Pacific octopus.”
Volunteer beach naturalists help people identify the object for curious tidepoolers who hadn’t seen one before.
“Usually I’m happy if I can just find a cool sun star, moon snail or nudibranch to point out to everyone but this is really something special,” said expert beachcomber Jen Sawtelle as she looked for more information on the studio apartment in an old newspaper classified section from 20 years ago she had on-hand. “I don’t think anyone has seen one of these things in Seattle in at least 15 years—more rare than a lost beluga in these parts. Always exciting to see what you’ll find in these tidepools.”
At press time, as much as everyone wanted to take the studio as their new home, beach naturalists reminded tidepoolers to leave everything on the beach including the studio as they found it.
