Today the Burien City Council passed a new ordinance which makes existing within the city limits of Burien a crime.
“We need to do what’s best for the people of Burien,” argued Burien Mayor Kevin Schilling. “And that means making sure they do not remain in Burien. Our Burien businesses will not be able to survive another season of being patronized by our fellow Burienites. If we leave Burien to the Burienites, there may not be a Burien left to call home.”
Concerned citizens made their voices heard during the public comment period of today’s council meeting.
“I just don’t feel comfortable being in Burien with all these other Burienites,” testified lifelong Burienite Tim Shart. “I think the only logical solution any of us can rationally come to for a truly safe, equitable community is to make it illegal for any one of us to be here at all. I agree that we should all make a pact to sweep ourselves out by July 1.”
While there was a long list of nuanced reasons the community agreed that being in Burien in any capacity needed to criminalized, most agreed the main reason was that Burien clearly doesn’t and has never actually even existed.
