After waiting for more than a year to attend one of their games again at T-Mobile Park last night, Mariners fan Sammy Sandoval said he’s still heartbroken today that he was robbed of an authentic M’s experience when the team not only won but spanked the Oakland Athletics.
“I was just looking forward to witnessing with my own eyes my favorite team lose, just like old times,” said Sandoval, 19, wiping away tears. “But stupid Mitch Haniger had to hit not one, but two three-run homers and it just went uphill from there. People were cheering, going nuts, regaining hope – it was horrible. Not even one dude was sobbing into an Edgar Martinez jersey.”
Sandoval said the emotional rollercoaster he felt during the game was excruciating.
“Someone unfurled this big ‘Believe’ banner at the game implying any of us should have hope that the Mariners will go to the playoffs for the first time in my entire lifetime,” Sandoval said. “Who were those Ted Lasso-watching sickos? I don’t know what happened to this team and the whole fan-base last night, but I just feel robbed of the communal misery that really makes this team what it is.”
Not one to give up expecting the worst from his favorite team, Sandoval says he’s coming back to watch tonight’s game as well.
“Maybe not choking last night on one of their last shots to gain a wild card spot in the playoffs was just a fluke. They can’t possibly let me down again tonight.”
