As Gonzaga’s undefeated basketball team continues to impress the nation with a powerful March Madness run on the edge of making NCAA history, millions of Seattle area residents were mostly amazed to learn that Spokane is still in Washington.
“Whoa. I knew Gonzaga was out in Spokane, but I did not realize that meant they were both in still in Washington state – I thought that city slipped into Idaho ages ago,” said Seattle resident Randy Bolson scratching his head. “You sure? I swear we approved a state proposition to send them all up the river to Coeur d’Alene. What’s taking so long?”
Despite rampant disbelief in the Puget Sound region that almost every leading sports analyst’s favorite to win this year’s NCAA basketball championship is from a city in the same state they live in, local geographic experts agree Spokane is still in Washington state and has been for some time.
“We don’t know exactly why it’s so hard for people in the Seattle area to remember that Spokane is still in Washington state,” said geographer Tad Stevens. “Maybe they block it out because UW hasn’t broken past the Sweet Sixteen since 1953? We’re just not sure.”
Although slightly offended, Spokane residents said they can’t blame Western Washington for their forgetfulness.
“I know the feeling,” said Spokane native Deb Warsaw. “I always forget that Seattle is still in Washington until Election Day.”
At press time, Bellingham residents sick of new people moving there were hoping most Washington state residents still think they’re in Canada.
