Fulfilling a promise she made long ago, today Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced that she’s finally brought the Sonics back to the Seattle Center food court.

“It took years of lobbying and negotiation to make this happen, but we did it – we finally did it! Today we’re overjoyed that our city can once again say ‘Let’s go to Sonic’s!’” said Durkan at an afternoon press conference. “Now we can eat Oreo Big Scoop Cookie Dough SONIC Blast & Sundaes too – take that Oklahoma City! … And Kent, Poulsbo and Marysville.”

In keeping with the city’s and nearby Climate Pledge Arena’s environmental goals, Sonic CEO Herb Wheeler said the location will also be the first Sonic Walk-In.

“We’re thrilled to have this franchise expansion right here in Seattle Center,” said Wheeler. “Honestly we would have preferred to expand to Spokane, but what can I say? Mayor Durkan is a tough negotiator who totally gets what her city wants and needs right now and she delivered.”

Durkan says she promises to do whatever it takes to keep Sonics in Seattle despite rumors that former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz feels a sudden compulsion to buy the fast-food chain and move the expansion to Tulsa.
