Following the burning of Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral on Monday, local wanderluster Bethany Pierce took to social media to voice the personal tragedy she’s now experiencing right here in the Pacific Northwest.
The magnitude of her deep loss was captured in a caption she wrote for a photo post featuring both the 900-year-old structure and Pierce’s amazing décolletage.
“It’s times like these that remind you nothing is permanent and to take advantage of appreciating everything while you have it. If I hadn’t gone last year with my boyfriend, how would I have been able to immediately insert myself in the story of this tragedy? How else would I suddenly give a shit about people suffering in another country? What makes it even sadder is knowing that some of you don’t have a travel game that is as on-point as mine. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry. #Tears”
Even Pierce’s boyfriend, Taylor Wisecock, expressed on social media that he felt stunned, but overall overcome with gratitude for having gotten to see the cultural landmark already.
“Do you know what all of this means? It means I’m part of a special set of people now: I’m one of those people who enjoyed Notre-Dame in her prime. Fortunately, she’s still alive to see, of course, but, yeah. You know what I mean. #Blessed”
At press time, Pierce was scrolling past a story on the local homelessness epidemic, a video about the unresolved Flint water crisis, and a photo featuring a bomb crumb-dusted Syrian child refugee to check on her notifications.
“The destruction to Notre-Dame is a tragedy,” Pierce said. “But sometimes a disaster half a world away is exactly what it takes to make everything about me.”
