Fiona Hayes, a Wallingford blogger who describes herself as a fashionista with a passion for travel and photography, loves to tell her friends about how her fabulous lifestyle became her career.

“I even have time to pursue a side hustle — I’m always grinding!” said Hayes, 27, to her regular happy-hour acquaintances with a laugh. “Being my own boss is amazing because I can do whatever I want, whenever I want.”

Fiona’s friends are suspicious of her side hustle’s hours.

“She’s always complaining about customers and can never hang out between nine and five on weekdays,” said acquaintance Julie Stewart. “I’ve never heard of such an inflexible side hustle.”

Despite listing her job on LinkedIn as “CEO LIFE 24/7,” Ms. Hayes only seems to update her blog in the evenings and on the weekends with little fanfare from her 321 followers.

When asked, Fiona’s parents seemed unaware of her side hustle.

“Our Fiona is a receptionist at a dentist’s office in South Lake Union,” said her mother, Brandy Hayes. “How is that a hustle – is that what they call that now?”
