After the cancellation of most sports events nationwide resulted in a disheartening downturn in father-son phone calls, spirits rose again as a recent call between John Castle and his son, Brett, entered a record-setting 14th minute following the 2020 NFL Draft.
“The Seahawks reaching for a mid-round linebacker in the back of the first round gave us all the material we needed for a thrilling five-minute conversation, and debating if the Seahawks should take a running back in the second round took us all the way to a crisp fourteen minutes,” said John, recently retired father and die-hard sports fan. “We haven’t talked for even 10 minutes since the Seahawks won the Superbowl! That call is one for the books. God, I love sports. Oh, and my son.”
His son Brett said he was equally relieved that this year’s virtual NFL draft provided a moment of respite in an otherwise bleak sport schedule.
“This time of year, I’m always asking my Dad what the heck is going on with the Mariners — everyone knows that a shaky Mariners bullpen is the bedrock of any good father-son relationship in the Seattle area,” said Brett. “Without that, I didn’t know when I’d ever even speak to him again. I’m just thankful the NFL Draft provided three days of sweet, sweet sports minutiae and a manly enough excuse for my father to share any kind of genuine emotional expression.”
Following the spirited discussion brought on by the three-day NFL draft, John and Brett say they’re eagerly looking forward to their upcoming phone call in September for the world’s next and only scheduled sport event, the Singapore Bubble Soccer World Cup.
