The time has finally come: This weekend is your last chance to car-jump the expanse between the yet-to-be-demolished remnants of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
If you haven’t already registered for a spot on this weekend’s jump, WSDOT says it’s not too late to go full Dukes-of-Hazzard alongside the Seattle waterfront, but you may want to get on it.
“The goodbye bicycle rides, runs and walks we hosted on the Viaduct earlier this year were cute,” said WSDOT spokesman Todd Haynes. “But I think true Seattleites know there’s really no better way to eulogize this historic roadway than an Evel Knievel-style death jump with your car.”
By Friday, a long line of drivers revving engines ready to air-summit the gaping highway crevasse had already formed ahead of the jump runway. Although some have reported excessive exhaust is thinning oxygen availability, drivers say they wouldn’t miss this opportunity for the world.
“Our lives may be on the line basically to get a photo of us doing something cool,” said driver Rusty Knotts. “But when it gets hard, I just remember how good it’s going to feel later to brag about what I’m willing to sacrifice to feel significant.”
